Despite the rain and weather, TCEP celebrated our 50th anniversary last month in Margaritaville in Lake Conroe. A great time was had by all with many decked out in 50s themed attire while trying our best to hula-hoop and ax throw! It was so nice to see many familiar faces as well as some new ones and to celebrate with everyone.
Our annual business meeting also took place during the weekend festivities where numerous awards were presented and elections took place for the Board of Directors. We are very excited to have some new faces join us on the Board of Directors including Dr. Ben Leeson, Dr. Julien Mahler, and Dr. Michael Parsa as full members of the board; as well as Dr. Brook Danboise as the young physician member on the board. Change is something to which we in emergency medicine are extremely accustomed. In fact, the nature of our job forces us to constantly deal with change. When the stable patient drops their blood pressure and becomes hypoxic, we don't kick sand and put our heads down or run away. We step up, drop a central line, start pressors, and secure the airway. We rally our team, engage consultants and make the required course alterations. We don't lament change, but rather we embrace it and do what's best for our patients. In a world that is constantly changing, we as emergency physicians are the best-equipped to adapt and to lead. It's what we do. READ MORE

CONNECT marked a poignant occasion, commemorating fifty years of advancement, ingenuity, and activism in emergency medicine.
Dr. Angela Gardner presented a keynote address titled "The Journey of Emergency Medicine: From Past to Future," contemplating TCEP's journey and influence throughout the last half-century. These milestones stand as a testament to the steadfast commitment and backing of TCEP's members in sculpting its illustrious legacy.
In addition, attendees gathered for a special 50th Anniversary Celebration, reminiscing about milestones and shared anecdotes while looking ahead to continued excellence in emergency care.

The Texas legislative interim process serves as a crucial period between regular sessions, enabling committees to delve into issues and prepare for future policymaking. Under Lt. Gov. Dan Patrick's guidance, Senate committees, including the Health and Human Services Committee, have been tasked with investigating 57 charges to address various concerns raised by Texans and senators alike. Similarly, committees in the House of Representatives, appointed by the Speaker of the House, are engaged in similar endeavors, studying issues and crafting recommendations. These committees conduct public hearings, gather input from stakeholders and experts, and produce reports summarizing their findings and policy recommendations.

TLAF: Call for Applications

The TCEP Leadership and Advocacy Fellowship (TLAF) program was developed to groom future emergency physician leaders. The fellowship combines elements of mentoring, organizational education and advocacy skills training in addition to guided experiences to selected fellows. READ MORE

More than 25 emergency physicians from across Texas met in Washington D.C. for ACEP's Leadership and Advocacy Conference (LAC). During the event, participants engaged in discussions with Representatives, Senators, and their healthcare aides, seeking support for addressing critical issues such as Boarding, Violence in Emergency Departments, Due Process Rights, and Medicare concerns.

Exploring Emergent Airway Management: A Collaboration between UIW-SOM, BAMC, & CHRISTUS Health/Texas A&M

Emergency airway management is a crucial skill in emergency medicine and anesthesia. The first part of the “ABCs” emphasizes the importance of mastering this skill. To offer medical students with interest in these fields early hands-on experience, I organized an emergent airway seminar for the UIWSOM emergency medicine interest group (EMIG) in collaboration with the anesthesia interest group (AIG). We also collaborated with EM residents and faculty from the Brooks Army Medical Center and Texas A&M Corpus Christi Spohn program. READ MORE

The New Certifying Exam: What it Is - and Isn't
|
ABEM recently announced that a new Certifying Exam will launch in 2026 as the final step for physicians in the process of becoming ABEM certified. The Certifying Exam resulted from a rigorous review of ABEM’s Oral Exam and the critical exploration of how physicians become certified that was conducted by the Becoming Certified Task Force. Over 4,000 stakeholders participated in the process and ABEM learned that its certification process can be even more relevant to practice and can assess additional competencies that the current Oral Exam format cannot such as critical communication and procedural skills. Looking across the medical specialty boards, more than half have an oral exam, the majority of which are “in person.”

Pay Your Membership Dues through ACH Transfer

We are excited to announce that ACEP now offers the option to pay your membership dues through direct ACH transfers, also known as electronic check. ACH transfers are electronic, bank-to-bank money transfers processed through the Automated Clearing House (ACH) Network. Not only does this make your renewal seamless, but it also saves our chapter money! Paying by ACH greatly reduces the fees that ACEP and our chapter must remit to the credit card companies and allows us to put more dollars directly towards the advocacy efforts and other member benefits that you value.
This new payment option is available on the membership application for new and renewing members, while those who are using installments and auto-renew can easily update their payment information any time by accessing the Payment Methods section of My Account on ACEP's website.
